The Healthy Families Lab, directed by Dr. Patricia N.E. Roberson and housed within the College of Nursing, investigates how marital and family relationships influence both mental and physical health outcomes. Our research focuses on patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and individuals living with diabetes in rural Appalachia. By examining the role of interpersonal relationships in shaping health, we aim to inform more holistic, patient-centered approaches to care and improve overall treatment outcomes.
Our work takes place both on campus at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Currently, we are collecting information from participants, recruiting additional patients, and preparing two publications.
Students are a central part of the Healthy Families Research Lab and are active contributors to ongoing research. Undergraduate and graduate researchers work alongside faculty and clinical partners to support projects that have real-world impact. If you are interested in joining our lab as a research assistant or participant, please contact us. We are always happy to answer any questions.
